My building concept is inspired by the 5 elements in Chinese philosophy. In Chinese philosophy, “Everything, including positive chi, is made up of some combination of these elements. They are Wood, Earth, Water, Fire, and Metal.” Since we are building a community service building in China, the building function should be to bring people together. The community needs the people to gather to support each other, in an attempt to become like the 5 elements, essential components which thrive when together. In Chinese traditional architecture, what is contained is more important than the container, just like how the elements create positive chi within the space. This building demonstrates how I see contemporary architecture living harmoniously within this environment, influenced by the 5 elements. I want people experience the building in a very harmonious relationship connecting through the characteristics of the 5 elements– water (water), wood (tree), metal (new materials), fire (light), and earth (ground), instead of seeing an object standing detached from the environment. This place will help visitor to understand; the brightness, texture, the compression of space, the expansion of space, from the characteristics of 5 elements enriching your senses and body – chi.
